Southport Hire Centre was started in 1971 by Alf Woods as a hardware and DIY shop. By 1975 he came to realise no one catered for hiring tools and equipment for DIY and trade although quite a few were selling tools. So the shop was developed, and changed over completely to hire by 1976, and he then was joined by son Ray in 1979.
The range started small, but grew as the market for equipment of this type was developed.
It was decided early on to provide a good local service, tending to overstock, so it would only be a rare occurrence that equipment would not be available, rather than have several outlets transferring equipment between each other.
Hire is mainly trade, but DIY customers are also welcome, and being so well established we have developed a good working knowledge of equipment and its uses, and advice can usually be given for most jobs.
